Understanding passport rankings and mobility.
How is Passport Mobility calculated?
Passport mobility scores represent the total count of sovereign territories and countries a passport holder can access without acquiring a traditional, pre-cleared embassy visa. We calculate this rank using three primary categories of travel clearance:
- Visa-Free Access: Direct border entry with just a valid passport.
- Visa on Arrival (VoA): Instantly granted visa at the arrival border checkpoint.
- e-Visa / eTA: Rapid online approval certificates obtained before travel.
By combining these elements, we establish a unified "travel freedom index" that ranks nations globally based on bilateral diplomatic strength.
Where does the rankings data come from?
To ensure absolute data transparency, our passport visa requirement matrix is sourced from public, open-source dataset repositories hosted on GitHub by PassportIndex.org.
We run automated daily synchronization scripts via GitHub Actions. These crons pull the latest bilateral agreements, stay limits, and electronic portals directly into our static database, providing a transparent, verifiable starting point for global travel planning.
Why do entry requirements change?
Visa requirements are not static; they shift continuously due to diplomatic negotiations, economic treaties, security parameters, and geopolitical alignments. For example, bilateral agreements often grant mutual visa exemptions to foster trade and tourism.
Conversely, political disputes or security emergencies can trigger swift visa suspensions or border constraints. Travelers must verify current consular databases before booking travel. Our automated crawling scripts sync daily with public passport databases to keep the matrix updated.
